About Laurie and Shannon

Meet Laurie and Shannon

Laurie is mommy to the handsome big boy with the fiery red hair. She is a clinical social worker specializing in older adults and compulsive hoarding.  Laurie experienced an ectopic pregnancy in the 10th week of pregnancy and had to be rushed into surgery.  “It really bothers me that there were so many moments during the process- from having my symptoms ignored, to being misdiagnosed as a miscarriage, to the after-care I received post-surgery that could have been handled with more care and understanding.” Laurie hopes that this study helps increase awareness and help women see that there is hope and healing over time.

Shannon is mommy to the precious little one sitting in the boppy® chair. Shannon is a social work professor with interests in women’s health and faith-based social work.  Shannon has experienced 3 ectopic pregnancies – two before conceiving her son and one about a year after her son was born. Each experience was different but all were emotionally and physically painful and traumatic.  “I am motivated to improve the care and information women receive when they experience an ectopic pregnancy. Every woman should be well-informed and know how to seek resources should they need them. Further, counseling should be available and offered to every woman to support her healing.”  Shannon is committed to sharing women’s stories in an effort to bring about change to who healthcare practitioners currently handle ectopic pregnancies.
